Press Release

25 Environmental Groups Ask Harvard President Not to Allow Poisoning of the Medical School Quad Lawn

In a letter dated May 3, 2000 addressed to Harvard University's President Neil L. Rudenstine, 25 organizations asked Harvard to cease and desist poisoning the Harvard Medical School quad lawn. They further asked that an event addressing the documented hazards of land application of sewage sludge also be sponsored with the same amount of resources and publicity that Harvard used to promote the land application of sewage sludge.

On May 3rd, 2000, the Harvard Medical School will co-sponsor an event with representatives from the sewage sludge disposal industry to promote the land application of sewage sludge in spite of the fact that the US 5th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that there is no scientific consensus that sewage sludge is safe. Notwithstanding this Federal Court ruling, Harvard University and the Harvard Medical School are planning a "live application" of sewage sludge to the Harvard Medical School's quad lawn.
